Tenugui are pieces of traditionally hand-dyed and hand-stenciled, beautiful cotton cloths that are simple, but serve a variety of purposes.
They can be used as a scarf or towel, as a table runner or placemat, or as a simple decoration on a wall. Japanese also use them traditionally in place of handkerchefs, or as a bandanna or headband. Tenugui can be finished or unfinished. The unfinished ones are more traditional, as a piece can be torn off and used in an emergency as a bandage or even a tourniquet.
